DMGT Enters Exclusive Talks to Acquire Telegraph Media Group

The Daily Mail and General Trust is seeking to acquire the Telegraph Media Group in a proposed £500 million

Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) has entered into exclusive negotiations to acquire Telegraph Media Group from RedBird IMI in a deal reported to be valued at approximately £500 million. Slaughter and May is advising DMGT on the proposed transaction.

The move follows the collapse of RedBird IMI’s earlier bid to take control of the Telegraph titles, which unravelled amid intense political and regulatory opposition to foreign state-linked ownership of a prominent UK media outlet. RedBird’s forced withdrawal created an opening for domestic interest, and DMGT, already one of the UK’s largest newspaper groups as owner of the Daily Mail, has emerged as the frontrunner.

Should the deal complete, it would further DMGT’s position in a national press market already concentrated among a handful of major publishers, this likely to attract scrutiny from regulators and media ownership authorities
